Here for your enjoyment is part one (The Captain Gives a Stamp of Considerable Magnitude) of an, up until now, undiscoverd literary treasure, “The Early Adventures of Midshipman Hildebrand Farnsworth, a narrative in his own words.”
Though not dated, this manuscript is thought to have been written in late 1776 or early 1777. Hildebrand Farnsworth, who was later able to purchase the commission of Midshipman in the new United States Navy, has left us, in this narrative, a valuable peek into maritime history. For that reason we have left the text almost exactly as he wrote it. We have only added a few minor corrections and interesting historical notes which you can find on the Editorial Notes page.
